What does the research say? Phonological and phonemic awareness are essential skills for our beginning readers. They are literally the foundation for everything else! Students need to be able to segment words into phonemes in order to decode and encode. Being able to change one sound in a word to make a new word will help our students be more effective at decoding and encoding.
