What does the research say? Phonological and phonemic awareness are essential skills for our beginning readers. They are literally the foundation for everything else! Students need to be able to segment words into phonemes in order to decode and encode. If students can break a word into sounds and then count the sounds, it will help them map the word to be able to write it.
