Interactive Decodable Readers combine decoding, fluency, and comprehension for meaningful reading practice. Science of Reading small group lesson plans are included for you to make planning a breeze, but the real star of the show are the CVC words interactive decodable readers!

With these CVC words decodable readers, students will be asked to read and comprehend each page and then cut and match a picture to finish the scene. Your students will be so engrossed, they won’t even realize how much they’re learning!

If I use your Science of Reading Guided Curriculum, could I add these in? Yes! Science of Reading small group lesson plans are included to make this seamless. These books would work well towards the end of Unit 2 or in Unit 3.

What’s unique about these CVC words decodable readers? With these interactive decodable readers, students can’t rely on the picture in order to read. That means, they have to interact with and comprehend the text to finish the scene.

How to use these interactive decodable readers:

1. Optional: Use the optional small group lesson plan to guide students through the lesson.
2. Students will read each page and then match a picture to finish the scene.
3. Read the books again for fluency.
4. On the back cover, discuss the comprehension questions and then practice either blending or encoding with a dictated sentence.

2 back cover options: I have given you two back cover options for these books. The first option has comprehension questions and then space for students to write words and a sentence that you dictate (these are given to you in the lesson plans). The second option has comprehension questions and then words and a sentence for students to practice decoding and blending for fluency.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Are these books aligned with the Science of Reading? Yes! These books and the included small group lesson plans are 100% aligned with best practices from the Science of Reading.

Do I have to use these in small groups? No. These interactive decodable readers would also make a great literacy center, they can be sent home for additional practice, or used as a follow up to a phonics lesson.

What heart words or high frequency words are used? I tried to keep the high frequency words used to a minimum in these books. The heart words you will see are: the, see, a, to. The decodable HFWs include can, up, on, in, and.

Are these interactive decodable readers included in any bundle? Not at this time. If more books are created in the future, I will not bundle these books until all future skills are complete.

Are the lesson plans editable? The lesson plans are not editable, but if you need a lesson plan template to make these your own, you can find a free Science of Reading small group lesson plan template here.
