Are you looking for a fun and engaging way to practice decoding, reading fluency, and comprehension – all wrapped into one? This set of 85 decodable partner plays are the solution! Combine phonics and literacy standards with drama, theater, and fine arts.

How do these decodable partner plays work? Students will grab a partner and put on a play! Each script includes back and forth decodable dialogue.

What is included in each pack?

  • Decodable partner plays in color and black and white
  • Character hats, name tags, and puppets
  • Mini decodable books of each play
  • Optional response sheets
  • Materials to put together a “decodable theater”

These decodable partner plays are 100% aligned with the Science of Reading SOR! You will only see the phonics skills previously taught and very limited high frequency words. Some rebus pictures are used in earlier levels to allow for richer stories. The text is not patterned at all.

These decodables will follow the same scope and sequence as my Science of Reading Guided Curriculum.

What is included in this bundle?

How can I use these Decodable Partner Plays in my classroom?

  • Partner literacy centers: Once taught the routine, this can easily become an independent partner literacy center in your classroom.
  • Individual option: Puppets are included so students have the option of reading and performing each play on their own.
  • Small groups: Use the partner plays as an alternative to decodable readers.
  • Dramatic play: An optional Decodable Theater set up is included to help you create a meaningful and educational dramatic play theater.
  • Classroom performances: Create a family performance night or just put on play performances for your own class!

About the plays:

Each play script is 2-3 pages long and can be printed front and back if desired. Each play has 2 characters. They contain the characters at the top and character icons with highlighting to help students keep their place. Optional character hats, name tags, or puppets are included to help students act out the story.

About the extras:

Mini decodable books are included of each story. These books include the character dialogue. Students can use these mini decodable readers to follow along with the partner plays, or to take home and read to their families.

EASY printing options! EASY print buttons are included. The document must be opened in Adobe Reader (a free program) for these to work. Instantly print all color materials, all black and white materials, or the materials for one play with the click of a button.

Looking for more partner activities?

⭐️You may like the Partner Decodable Readers! These differ from the partner plays as they are short decodable stories that each partner will read half of. These are a great option for partner reading.
