HOW TO USE: Students will place magnetic chips into the top circles. They will pull a chip down as they say each sound. Then, they will swipe the chips with a magnetic wand as they blend the word back together.
Don’t have magnetic wands? You can use any manipulatives you have such as cubes, counters, or mini-erasers!
Use these as a phonemic awareness literacy center activity or as an independent practice activity.
Why these phonemic awareness worksheets? These segmenting and blending cards are a low prep option for small group activities, but they are still engaging for students!
What does the research say? Phonological and phonemic awareness are essential skills for our beginning readers. They are literally the foundation for everything else! Students need to be able to segment words into phonemes in order to write them. They need to be able to say the sounds and then blend words in order to decode.
