December Literacy Centers for Kindergarten
If you’re a kindergarten teacher, you probably know just how hard it can be to manage literacy centers and keep your students engaged in practicing sight words once the snow starts falling. That’s why these December Editable Sight Word Centers have been a life saver for me – you read that right, they’re editable!
That means you can type in the sight words YOU need and – boom– 10 centers are automatically created for you!
I actually use these sight word centers and games all year long, I just change up the theme each month. It keeps them predictable enough that my kindergarten students can be completely independent in these literacy centers, but they’re still exciting for them!
December Sight Word Centers for Kindergarten
Roll and Color is one of my kindergarten students favorite sight word centers! Rolling the dice keeps them moving and active (we just have to be careful not to throw roll it too far – Ha!) and they absolutely love being able to color.

We love to play sight word games with partners! For this sight word game, students have to roll a word, read it, and the move their game piece to that word.
Winter Sight Word Games
Spin and Cover is another popular sight word game in my class! Students spin the spinner, find that word, and cover it with their color counter. If they spin a word that is all covered, they can either not get to cover any, or they can ‘bump’ the other play off. The player with the most spots covered in the end wins!

We play Write The Room two different ways in my room, depending on the group and if they need a change! The first way is, of course, hanging them up around the room and having students search for them with a clipboard.
The second way is to put them in a sensory bin! For December write the room, I like to put cotton balls as “snow,” confetti, and glass fishbowl filler rocks in my sensory bin! You could also add in fun Christmas items too!

I think that Roll and Write is one of those kindergarten sight word centers that everyone knows! I love this version, though, because I can easily just type in the words and print.
Sometimes I use Mr. Sketch Scented Markers to make this ‘new’ again, but usually I make this December literacy center reusable by sticking it in a dry erase sleeve!
Kindergarten Sight Word Games and Centers
This sight word center is another fun twist on an old favorite – Rainbow Writing! Again, this literacy center brings in movement with the spinner. Students will pick a sight word, spin a color, and write the sight word in that color!
Literacy Centers for Sight Words
This sight word center is very similar to Roll and Color, but the twist of adding a spinner makes it brand new to my kiddos (it’s the simple things)!
December Sight Word Practice for Kindergarten
This sight word center is used in two different ways. The first way is just to match the words and write them. This is usually the way I have my students who still need to work on visual discrimination us it!
The second way is to play it as a sight word game! Students turn all the cards over (be sure to print on card stock so that they are not transparent). They will take turns flipping over 2 cards to see if they can make a match! They have a blast playing this way!
Winter Sight Word Activities for Kindergarten
For this December literacy center, I use pocket dice to get in some gross motor skills – yes, they usually go across the room. Since we work on the floor, I don’t mind, but you could always have students roll in a set space!
Students will roll a sight word, read the sight word, and then write the word.
December Sight Word Games for Kindergarten
This sight word center is used mostly by my highest students. Students will pick a sight word card and then pick a vocabulary word and use them together in a sentence. I do give students a few different vocabulary lists to choose from.
Want to try these centers in your own classroom?
You have a few different options! You can find the December Sight Word Centers separately, but you can also get them in a growing bundle that is deeply discounted in price! You can also try out a FREE set of Editable Sight Word Centers here!
