Partner math games are a BIG part of our kindergarten math routine, so I am always looking for easy, low-prep addition math games we can play. These beginning addition math games are perfect for kindergarten!
It’s the same addition math game, but you can play it two different ways – perfect for differentiating your math block!
Addition Game Supplies:
For this partner math game, each pair of students will need:
- A number line to 12 – I just wrote the numbers on a sentence strip!
- 2 Dice
- Colored connecting cubes – each partner needs their own color
Addition Game LEVEL ONE
The first way to play this addition math game is super simple. You can start with this version of the game and then move to level two later in the year.
How to play:
- Partner one rolls both dice. They will add the two dice together. Differentiation tip: Use dot dice for adding amounts or switch them out for number dice if your students are ready.
- Partner one puts one of their cubes on the number line on the number that they rolled.
- Partner two rolls both dice and adds them together.
- Partner two puts one of their cubes on the number line on the number that they rolled.
- If the number has already been covered, that student cannot put their cube on the number line. It is the next person’s turn.
- Continue until all numbers have been covered. If you play for winners, the partner with the most numbers covered wins.
Addition Math Game LEVEL TWO
Level two is basically the same game, but there is a new twist – players can bump each other off a spot! However, they can also lock down their spot.
How to play:
- Partner one will roll both dice. They will add the two dice together.
- They will put one of their cubes on the number line on the number that they rolled.
- Partner two will roll both dice and add them together.
- They will put one of their cubes on the number line on the number that they rolled.
- If that number is already covered, they will BUMP the other player’s cube off and take that spot!
- But, if a player rolls a number that their own color is covering, they can create a stack by putting a second cube on top. It is now locked and the other student CANNOT bump it off!
- Continue until all numbers are covered. If you play for winners, the partner with the most numbers covered wins.
Ways to Differentiate This Math Game
You can easily differentiate this math game to work for all your levels of students.
- You can swap out the dot dice for number dice. This is great for students who are ready to add mentally.
- Take away a die. If your students are only ready for number sense, you can take away a die. You can also use a numbers to 10 or 20 die and have students simply match numerals.
- Add three dice! You will just need a longer number line. First grade teachers, this is an easy way to adapt this addition game for your class.
Teaching Addition in Kindergarten
Okay, I love this addition game, but how do I teach addition in kindergarten? Isn’t there something that already has it all planned out for me? Yes! This math game is an awesome addition to my Addition to 10 guided math unit!
Did you play this math game with your class? Have any tips? I would love to hear about it below!
