In this blog post: Are you teaching the alphabet in preschool, pre-k, or kindergarten? Find free printable alphabet crowns featuring Letter Lion to work on letter recognition, letter tracing, and letter sounds.
One of my favorite parts of being a Kindergarten teacher is getting to introduce and teach the alphabet each year.
We have students come in with absolutely no alphabetic knowledge, and the progress they make within just a few weeks is nothing short of amazing. There is just something about seeing students get so excited to unlock this “secret code” to reading!
Our Kindergarten phonics curriculum begins the year by teaching a letter a day. While that might seem like it could get a little stale, adding in fun activities like these free printable alphabet hats can make it that much more exciting.
Who is Letter Lion?
First, you might be wondering, who in the world is Letter Lion?
Letter Lion was originally the mascot of the Preschool and Pre-K Phonics Curriculum. However, he has come to be loved by kindergarten teachers as well for his ability to make learning letters fun!
We use a lion puppet as Letter Lion, but you can use a printable lion as well.
Letter Lion introduces us to our letter each day and also shows up in the alphabet review digital teaching slides to help us review letters and letter sounds.

Alphabet Hats – Option 1
Depending on whether you teach preschool, pre-k, or kindergarten, you may want your alphabet crowns to be more or less involved. This alphabet hats free printable includes two different options for you.
For the first option, students will simply cut out the alphabet hat outline and glue on a sentence strip.
Measure the sentence strip to students’ heads and staple to create alphabet crowns.
Then, students can cut out the pictures and match the images that begin with the letter sound. Each letter includes 3 pictures that begin with the letter sound and 2 that do not for students to sort.
You’ll notice that these alphabet crowns also feature Letter Lion holding an object that begins with the letter sound! Students can compare the beginning sounds of their pictures to that object to see if they are the same.
Alphabet Hats – Option 2
The second option of these free alphabet crowns includes a back band. On this band, students will practice tracing the uppercase and lowercase letters.
They will also practice letter recognition by coloring the boxes that contain the letter.
Instead of gluing on sentence strips, glue or staple the back band to the crown. You will want to attach one side and then measure to students’ heads before attaching the other side.
