In this blog post: Grab a set of 6 free New Year’s Eve themed math and literacy centers perfect for preschool, pre-k, kindergarten, and first grade.
You know I love any excuse for a new theme of math and literacy centers, so when someone in our teacher facebook group asked if I had any for New Year’s… well, no, but I had to make it happen!
I know it’s a little late to prep these centers (it’s literally January 1 today), but this party theme can really be used anytime of the year!
This set of free New Year’s Eve math and literacy centers includes 6 hands-on math and literacy centers that are all differentiated to work for preschool, pre-k, kindergarten, and first grade.
That means you can also easily differentiate and meet your students where they are!
Let’s take a closer look at the free New Year centers.

New Year Center 1: Cover by Code
If there’s one thing that will always be true about me, it’s that I will always have a cover by code center out. These no prep mats are print and go, but they still get students thinking and moving!
To use this literacy center, students will read the letters or words and cover them according to the code. You any colorful manipulatives you already have in your classroom, or play up the theme with fun star erasers!
The skills covered in this literacy center include:
- Visual discrimination with letters
- Letter ID
- Beginning sounds
- CVC words
- Digraphs
- NG and NK
- CVCe words
New Year Center 2: Clip Cards
Clip cards are always another favorite center because they’re easy to prep (just chop and go), but they also get in important fine motor practice.
For this literacy center, students will identify the letter or the picture. Then, they will clip the matching letter or word on their card.
The skills included in this center are:
- Matching uppercase and lowercase letters
- CVC words
- CVC/CVCe words
New Year Center 3: Roll and Color
Pocket Dice Centers are always a favorite of students. There’s just something about rolling a giant dice that gets students excited!
You can find my favorite high-quality pocket dice to use for pocket dice centers here.
For this center, students will roll the pocket die and read the letter or word. Then, they will color the matching picture on their recording sheet.
This center includes:
- Beginning sounds
- CVC words
- Beginning blends
- R-controlled vowels
New Years Center 4: Cover by Code Math
Whenever possible, I like to have similar centers in both our math and literacy centers. This just helps keep things predictable!
For this cover by code center, students will cover the squares according to the number they match.
This center includes:
- Number sense to 10
- Number sense to 20
- Addition to 15
- Addition to 20
New Years Center 5: Spin and Cover Shapes
Spin and Cover is another no prep center that is high engagement. Just add transparent spinners and manipulatives to make this center hands-on!
For this math center, students will spin a 2D shape or a 3D shape and cover a real-life shape that matches.
New Years Center 6:
Count and Stack is a great math center option for building number sense and getting in some fine motor practice. Just add stacking cubes!
For this math center, students will build cube towers to match the numbers. If using the addition or subtraction mats, students will use the cubes to solve and then stack the answer on the mat.
This math center includes:
- Number sense and counting
- Addition
- Subtraction
