What Are Sight Words?
Sight words and high frequency words are commonly occurring words in the texts our students will read. Sight words are words that do not follow spelling rules and, for the most part, cannot be decoded. An example of a sight word is the word the. It cannot be sounded out phonetically.
High frequency words are decodable, but they occur so frequently that students need to know them by heart. An example of a high frequency word is like. This word follows the CVCe spelling pattern and can be decoded, However, it occurs so frequently in text, usually before our students have even learned that spelling pattern, that we want students to have it memorized.
In Kindergarten, we often use the terms sight words and high frequency words interchangeably. In this blog post, I will be using ‘sight words’ to refer to both.
