As a Kindergarten teacher, you’re either all in on crafts or you wouldn’t touch them with a ten foot pole. There doesn’t seem to be much in between.
Personally, i’m team crafts for Kindergarten.
There are just so many benefits to academic crafts in the classroom!
Today i’ve gathered a list of the 5 best Kindergarten crafts for back to school – and it includes a free All About Me Backpack craft.
The Benefits of Crafts in the Classroom
There are so many benefits to making crafts in the classroom. This includes but is not limited to:
❤️ Building Fine Motor Skills: In my kindergarten classroom, we made multiple crafts a day at the beginning of the year. Why? Because crafts are an easy, fun, and effective way to practice fine motor skills like cutting, gluing, and writing.
🧡 Practice Listening Comprehension: Crafts in kindergarten are a wonderful way to practice listening comprehension and build oral language skills. Students have to listen to, comprehend, and put into practice colors, directions, and positional words, even for the simplest of kindergarten crafts.
💛 Practice Following Directions: We need a LOT of practice listening and following directions in Kindergarten! Crafts are a great way to slowly build up to following multi-step directions.
💚 Allow for Creative Expression: If you’ve ever seen crafts in Kindergarten, you know that even the most cookie cutter craft will get an expressive twist from each student. Art projects and crafts allow for students to express themselves and explore their creative side.
💙 Enhance Academics: Kindergarten crafts can easily enhance and compliment your academic learning. For example, the back to school name crafts below allow students to practice recognizing and spelling their names in a way that feels different than just another name worksheet.
Now that you know the benefits of crafts in the classroom, let’s explore 5 of my favorite Kindergarten crafts for back to school.
Crayon Box Name Craft
One of my favorite back to school crafts for Kindergarten every single year is the crayon box name craft. This name craft is unique because it can also double as a name puzzle, allowing students to build their name over and over again.
To make this back to school craft, your kindergarten students will assemble the crayon box template (or you can pre-make these for students).
You can make the crayon box craft into a pocket OR leave it flat and glue on a sheet of paper.
Then, students will use the crayons to spell their name in the crayon box.
This crayon box name craft has options for shorter and longer names, plus a digital crayon box name craft option to continue the practice at home.

Crayon Box Math Craft
Another take on the crayon box craft are these crayon box math crafts. This back to school craft has multiple options for your Kindergarten or first grade students to complete.
You can practice:
- Counting to 5 with five frames
- Counting to 10 with ten frames
- Basic addition
To make this Kindergarten craft for back to school, students will again assemble the crayon box. They will glue on the five frame, ten frame, or addition sentence depending on the math craft you choose.
Then, students will add crayons to their crayon box to match the number.
This back to school math craft would also be a great way to wrap up the first Kindergarten math unit: Numbers to 5 or the first 1st grade math unit: Numbers to 10.

School Bus Name Craft
Another twist on the Kindergarten crafts for back to school is this fun school bus name craft. Your students will LOVE spelling their name on the bus, and this craft makes the most adorable bulletin board display.
For this back to school craft, students will cut out and assemble the school bus craft. I tried to keep the cutting as simple as possible on this one because we usually make this craft the first week of school!
Then, students will assemble their name on the school bus.
This name craft is editable, which means you can type students’ names onto the page and then print. You can then reuse these letter tiles for name crafts the rest of the year!

Pencil Name Craft
Are you sensing a theme here? I’m all about name crafts in Kindergarten, especially at back to school! This pencil name craft is simple, but adorable and would make a great classroom display.
To make this craft, your students will cut out and assemble the pencil. It doesn’t get easier than the simple cutting lines of this back to school craft!
Then, students will cut out the letters to spell their name and spell it on the pencil craft.
Just like the school bus name craft, this craft is editable to allow you to type the letters of students’ names right onto the page.

Free All About Me Craft
At the beginning of the year, we love to learn all about ourselves and how we are alike and different. This FREE back to school backpack craft let’s students write all about themselves – and yes, it doubles as a name craft. ;D
Students will love writing All About Me and filling in each page with their family, their favorite things, and what they want to be when they grow up.
After, students can make the back to school backpack craft and build their name on the front.
Staple the pages to the backpack at the top to create All About Me Books!
