I love exploring living and nonliving things each spring because its the perfect way to kick off our plant and animal studies! We spent a week exploring what makes something alive and what living things need to stay alive!
Living and Nonliving Things Picture Sorts
After reading about living things with the book, “What’s Alive?” by Kathleen Zoehfeld, we complete this picture sort whole group.
On day one, we did a simple picture sort to get my students thinking and to prepare them for our more complicated magazine hunt the next day!
My students got SO into this living and nonliving things magazine hunt! They searched for pictures to cut out and glue on, and it was so cool to hear them talking through why they chose each picture!
Living and Nonliving Things Nature Walk
We spent one morning at the park and worked with partners to find living and nonliving things! I gave each of my students a paper and a marker and let them go!
We found lots of living and nonliving things around the park!
Science Notebook Activities
We added these sorts and interactive notebook activities to our science notebooks throughout the week!
Living Things Reader
We used this living things emergent reader during our shared reading one day! You can get this as a freebie below!
Living Things Craft and Writing
We finished up our week by recording our learning in these living things flip books! We were able to identify what makes something alive, what living things need, and why we are living things!
I hope you enjoyed these living and nonliving activities! You can find the Living and Nonliving Unit here and you can enter your email below to get the living things emergent reader for FREE!

I have tried 5 times to get the emergent reader and the decodable readers. Nothing has come through. I’ve checked my spam also.
Is there a way you can send them to me to : [email protected]
Thank you very much!

Hi! Send me an email at [email protected] so I can make sure it gets to you and doesn’t get blocked. It looks like you’re using a school district account, which is why the emails aren’t going though to you. Districts filter out these emails.

I would love the emergent reader

You just need to enter your email 🙂 I suggest using a gmail account as school emails often block emails
