Need a quick, easy to prep math centers option? Wondering how in the world you can have hands on independent centers while social distancing? I created these math and literacy binder centers for kindergarten to solve those problems!
While these center mats were created with kindergarten in mind, the literacy center mats have 1st grade skills included, and the math mats will be updated to include first grade later this year.
How Can I Use These Center Mats?
There are a few different ways that you can use these centers, and I talked about them in this post: Social Distancing Centers for Kindergarten.
The first option is to create a binder of centers. For this option, you can just print the math and literacy center mats and place them in sheet protectors.
You can also save space by putting pages back to back in the sheet protectors – it would be super simple to have math centers on one side and literacy centers on the other!
Don’t want to buy a class set of binders? Poly folders with sheet protectors would work as well!
You can also laminate the center mats and put them in center baskets or center bins. The skills cover the entire year!
Literacy Center Binders for Kindergarten
The binder of literacy centers contains multiple hands on alphabet centers. Just add manipulatives {They can use the manipulatives from their math took kits}.
Pom poms, mini erasers, and dry erase markers are all easy supply options to include.
Transparent spinners are also great to include! If you don’t want to purchase these, you can teach students to use a paperclip and pencil to create a spinner.
I love page protectors because they erase so easily! The facial pads from Dollar Tree are an inexpensive dry erase eraser option.
If you don’t have class sets of magnetic letters, I have a printable letter board option for you here.
Beginning Sound Activities
Mini erasers are an easy way to make a center feel “new” again!
The skills included in the binder centers allow you to easily differentiate for kindergarten or first grade.
Sight Word Centers
The sight word center mats included are editable! You are not limited to any word list. Make sure you open the PDF in Adobe. Then you can just type in your words and print!
If you love my editable sight word games and centers, these sight word mats would be a great no prep option for you.
The variety of activities included means that differentiating is easy! For this sight word center, you can type in any sight word sentence.
Word Family Activities
There are a variety of centers included to work with CVC words and word families.
There are also advanced word families included for first grade:
CVC Word Binder Centers for K-1
There are also plenty of opportunities for students for work with beginning and ending sounds, short vowels, and CVC words.
For this binder center, students will spin a short vowel and cover a word that contains that medial vowel sound.
Students can practice stretching out and building CVC words.
They can also practice reading and identifying real and nonsense words.
Silent E Word Activities
Students can practice identifying long vowel sounds and building CVC words.
Adding dice is an easy way to engage students in centers!
Digraphs and Blends
Digraphs are one of my favorite phonics skills to teach! These literacy center mats are an easy practice option.
And of course, who doesn’t love playdough? But if you are someone who hates playdough, you can easily swap it out for small manipulatives!
Advanced Sounds
There are a variety of advanced sound activities included if your kindergarten students are ready for a challenge or if you teach first grade.
Students will practice reading and writing r-controlled vowel words.
For this activity, students will identify vowel teams in words.
Diphthongs are the skill I can never spell but love to work with.
Reading Graphic Organizers
The literacy binder centers also include reading graphic organizers. Students can choose a book from their book box or from the classroom library, read it, and then fill out the story map.
You could also use these with your classroom read alouds.
Math Binder Centers for Kindergarten
Right now, the binder of math centers covers a variety of kindergarten skills. Advanced first grade skills are not yet included, but they will be added later this year.
Students will have the opportunity to work with numbers in multiple ways. This is so important for building number sense!
Many of the math mats are similar to the literacy binder centers. That means that you don’t have to continuously re-teach center expectations.
You will have options to work with numbers 0-5, 1-10, and 11-20.
For this math center, students will practice counting on.
Composing and Decomposing Numbers
Students will get to practice composing and decomposing numbers in a variety of ways. For this center, students will explore different ways to make 5.
Making 10 is an important standard in kindergarten and 1st grade!
Number bonds can be a tricky concept. This center makes number bonds fun and understandable!
Comparing Numbers
You can differentiate this center by simply swapping out the dice! Change the dot die to a 12 or 20-sided die.
Practice comparing numbers up to 20 and using the greater than, less than, and equal to signs.
2D and 3D Shapes Activities
A variety of 2D and 3D shape center mats are included. Students will get to practice making shapes, identifying shapes, drawing shapes, and finding shapes in the real world.
Measurement and Data
Spin and graph is such a fun data center! Multiple themes are included to keep it fresh.
Make this nonstandard measurement center new again by changing the manipulatives!
Students can practice sorting objects by different attributes.
Addition and Subtraction Centers for Kindergarten
The addition and subtraction machines are a fun way to actually “see” the process of addition and subtraction!
Addition and subtraction mats are included so that students can act out the number sentences.
Again, who doesn’t love playdough? Especially when you get to smash it to sutbract!
How cute would it be if you used a frog or rabbit mini eraser to practice hopping on the number line?
