We’re getting ready to start subtraction next week, and I thought this penguin activity and subtraction craft would be a fun addition to my subtraction unit!

We’ll use the subtraction mat to practice acting out story problems and using manipulatives to solve subtraction problems. The craft will be a great follow up to display their learning!
We will use these mats to practice solving subtraction story problems. I love using these mats whole group to practice, and then re-using them as a math center. If you are going to make them into a math center, just add dice or the subtraction spinners from my math unit!
Students will listen to my story problems and act them out using the fish counters. They will then write the subtraction problem.
I stick these in sheet protectors so students can write on them with dry erase markers. I have included two versions – one with a place to fill in the subtraction number sentence and one without.
After, we will make these adorable penguins to display their learning! I let my students choose the number of fish they start with and the number the penguin eats, but you can assign them numbers too.

Hi, first check your spam folder and make sure you are not using a school email. The subject should be “please confirm your subscription.” When you hit confirm you will get the download
The plug in to download it stopped working, but I believe it is working again! You should be able to sign up and download it now.
