HOW TO USE: Students will say the word on each card. They will segment the word into sounds or phonemes. Then they will clip the hand with the matching number of fingers.
Why clip cards? These phonemic awareness clip cards are a low prep option for literacy center for small group activities, but they are still engaging for students! The clothespins add essential fine motor practice.
What does the research say? Phonological and phonemic awareness are essential skills for our beginning readers. They are literally the foundation for everything else! Students need to be able to segment words into phonemes in order to decode and encode. If students can break a word into sounds and then count the sounds, it will help them map the word to be able to write it.
