Fire Safety Week Picture Books
Miss Mingo and the Fire Drill
It’s hard to find picture books about fire drills! In this story, Miss Mingo discusses what to do during a fire drill with her class. This is a great book to discuss what to do during a fire drill, but also students’ feelings and reactions to a drill.
This is another book about a fire drill, but it is much simpler and would be perfect for preschool or kindergarten. Each page features a short sentence or phrase.
No Dragons for Tea: Fire Safety for Kids (and Dragons)
This is one of the best fire safety books for kids, in my opinion! When a dragon comes to visit and accidentally starts a fire, the little girl knows just what to do to be safe. It is an entertaining story that will have kids laughing and learning.
The main character in this story is a worrier and she can’t stop worrying about fire safety. She learns that a great way to stop her worrying is to learn how to be safe and be prepared. I’m sure many of our young learners can relate!
This book uses a catchy tune to teach students what to do if there is a fire – get to safety and dial 9-1-1!
This book is by the same author as Dial 9-1-1! and it also teaches students a tune for what to do if there is a fire in their home.

If you learn about firefighters during fire safety week or during your community helpers unit, then these books are a must!
In this book, students will get a closer look at everything a firefighter does – from fighting fires, to helping at accidents, to teaching others about fire safety.
This is a very simple book that takes children through a firefighter’s day. It’s a great introduction to what a firefighter is!
Gail Gibbons has some of the best nonfiction books for children and this one is no exception. This book shows students what a firefighter does and the tools that they use.

In this story, children will say good night to different types of fire trucks. This is another great story for talking about the different fire trucks and their jobs.
In this fiction story, the firetruck is personified as it goes through a busy day helping others. This one is just a fun book to read!
Firefighter Fiction Picture Books
A great way to get in more firefighter fun during fire safety week is to bring firefighter fiction books into your literacy lessons. After reading this stories, you can compare and contrast what you learned about firefighters and fire safety in the nonfiction books.
Pete the Cat: Firefighter Pete
Who doesn’t love Pete? In this story, Pete and his class go on a field trip to the fire station to learn all about firefighters.
Clifford is another classic character! In this story, Clifford’s brother is a firehouse dog. When Clifford goes to visit him, he gets to help out.
The Gingerbread Man Loose on the Fire Truck
“I’ll ride to the rescue as fast as I can! I want to help, too! I’m the gingerbread man!” The gingerbread man is loose again, this time at the fire station. What adventures will he get into?
There is a reason I chose this book for Little Readers October! Follow the brave firefighters as they put out a fire and save a kitten from the home. Spanish words are mixed into the story naturally.
This picture book is mostly wordless, but it does feature sound words on every page. It should fit in perfectly to your Writer’s Workshop at the beginning of the year!
Fire engines aren’t the only transportation firefighters use! In this story about teamwork, Little Smokey the fire plane is still learning her place and how she can help fight forest fires.
This story is hilarious and will quickly become a favorite! Ted decides to be a firefighter for the day and help others.. from burning toast to science fair projects.
