In this blog post: Grab a set of 5 differentiated, winter themed Science of Reading literacy centers that are perfect for pre-k, kindergarten, 1st grade, or 2nd grade!
I’m pretty sure I blinked and summer went straight into winter this year! We’ve only had one real snow so far in Michigan, but that’s enough for me. It’s time to start planning and prepping all this snow and winter!
I’ve been promising more free Science of Reading aligned literacy centers for months now to our Facebook group, but life got in the way. But we’re coming back with a bang!
Since our free Apple Themed Science of Reading Literacy Centers were such a hit, I knew I had to make a winter version for you too. This set of winter literacy centers is SNOW much fun (ha!) and would be perfect for December, January, or February literacy centers.
Download them now or keep reading and grab them at the end of the post.

Science of Reading Aligned Centers
We cover this in every post, but I need to make sure you know this: You do NOT need to spend money on specific Science of Reading aligned literacy centers.
I feel like it can be easy to become overwhelmed as we’re making the switch to all things SOR, and it can cause us to second guess everything. But it’s true – any literacy centers that you already have and love that will work. Just make sure that they only cover phonics skills you’ve already taught!
That being said, what are the benefits of these winter themed Science of Reading literacy centers?
First, every center is completely controlled and follows along with the same scope and sequence as my Science of Reading Guided Curriculum.
That means that your students will ONLY be asked to work with words that contain the phonics skills they’ve learned. Everything is 100% decodable.
Next, these centers are completely differentiated for you!
No one feels like they are behind or getting a different activity, because all of the centers cover 8 different phonics skills. There’s a little something for everyone!
Winter themed sor centers
These winter themed Science of Reading literacy centers follow the same scope and sequence as my anytime Science of Reading Literacy Centers Bundle. That way you can “plug them in” wherever you are!
Each of these winter literacy centers covers 8 different phonics skills:
- Alphabet and beginning sounds
- CVC words
- Digraphs
- Beginning blends
- CVCe words
- Ending blends
- R-controlled vowels
- Vowel teams
I know this might seem like overkill, but I wanted you to be able to use these with your students no matter where they are along the phonics scope and sequence.
This set of free winter literacy centers includes both a color and black and white option as well, which makes prep easier for you!
Let’s take a close look at the Winter Themed Science of Reading Literacy Centers!
Winter Clip Cards
Phonics clip cards are always a hit because they are predictable centers, easy to prep, and a great way to sneak in some extra fine motor practice.
For the beginning sounds clip cards, students will clip the picture that begins with the letter sound.
For the rest of the phonics skills, students will clip the word that matches the picture on the clip card.
Search and Find Centers
Search and Find centers have been a teacher favorite from the regular Science of Reading Literacy Centers! You can use these with any manipulatives you already have in your classroom: cubes, magnetic chips, or mini-erasers.
For these winter alphabet centers, students will cover the circles that contain the uppercase or lowercase letter, or that contain a picture that begins with the letter.
On CVC words and beyond, students will cover the circles that contain the word that matches the phonics picture.
Cover by Code
These winter cover by code literacy centers are a great no prep literacy center option! Students will search and cover the boxes according to the code.
One mat is included for each phonics skills.
Spin and Cover Mats
Do you love transparent spinners as much as I do? I’m pretty sure I could add a transparent spinner to just about anything and students would go crazy over it!
For these Spin and Cover mats, students will spin a letter and cover a picture that begins with the letter.
On the other phonics skill mats, students will spin a picture and cover the matching word on their mat.
If you want to use these as a game, have each player use their own color cube or counter. The player with the most spots covered in the end wins.
Mitten Link Ups
For this free winter literacy center, students will match the mittens to the snowball by either matching the letters or matching the words to the pictures.
I love adding plastic chain links to our literacy centers because it’s great fine motor and students love them, but if you don’t want to use the chains you can just use these as a matching center.
