In this blog post: Grab a set of 6 differentiated, Dental Health themed Science of Reading literacy centers that are perfect for pre-k, kindergarten, 1st grade, or 2nd grade!
I know I say this every month, but January has actually flown by! It’s time to start planning for February, and honestly, that is one of my favorite months in the classroom.
February is packed full of fun themes and holidays that keep the month excited – Groundhog Day, Valentine’s Day, and of course, Dental Health Month!
Our thematic Science of Reading literacy centers are always a hit, so I thought it would be fun to offer dental health and teeth themed centers! This set includes 6 free dental health themed Science of Reading literacy centers.
Why SOR Literacy Centers?
We’ve covered this before, but it’s important that you know: you do not NEED specific Science of Reading aligned literacy centers.
As we make the switch to SOR aligned practices, it can be easy to get overwhelmed and feel like we need to buy, buy, buy all new things. The truth is, much of what you’ve been using in the past will still work today!
Already have literacy centers that you love? That’s great! Just make sure that they review phonics skills that you’ve already taught and *bam* you’re good to go!
So what are the benefits of these Science of Reading aligned literacy centers?
Well, first, they are easy to differentiate. Each literacy center activity includes 8 different phonics skills, which means that every student can work on the same center while reviewing the skills they need to work on.
And next, they are 100% controlled. That means that your students will only be asked to work with phonics skills and words they have been previously exposed to.
For example, if they are working on digraphs, the won’t see the word “cheese.” Why? Because students just beginning to learn digraphs most likely haven’t learned vowel teams like ee, the alternate sounds of s, or the jobs of silent e. It’s not decodable to them!
My Science of Reading Literacy Centers are always 100% controlled and follow the same scope and sequence and my Science of Reading Guided Curriculum.
Dental Health SOR Literacy Centers
These dental health themed Science of Reading literacy centers follow the same scope and sequence as my Science of Reading Literacy Centers Bundle. That means that you can plug them in to the current pack you’re using.
The skills covered in each center include:
- Alphabet and Beginning Sounds
- CVC Words and Short Vowels
- Digraphs
- Beginning Blends
- CVCe Words
- Ending Blends
- R-Controlled Vowels
- Vowel Teams
If you’ve loved my past free SOR literacy centers like the Apple Themed SOR Literacy Centers or the Winter Themed SOR Literacy Centers, the activities in this pack are similar but there are a few new center activities this month!
Clip Cards
Clip cards are always a favorite, because they are easy to prep and have an added fine motor component. For this set, students will either clip the matching letter or clip the matching word.
Search and Find Centers
I love how easy it is to switch up these Search and Find literacy centers – just swap manipulatives like magnetic chips, cubes, or mini-erasers!
For the alphabet version, students will search for the matching letters or pictures that begin with the letter. This center is perfect for preschool, pre-k, or Kindergarten!
For the word version, students will search for and cover the words that match the picture.
Flip and Color
Flip and Color is a new addition to the free thematic SOR literacy centers, but if you own my Science of Reading Literacy Centers Bundle, it will be familiar to you.
For this center activity, students will flip a card and find the matching letter or word. They will color it the same color as the toothbrush on the card.
TIP: Place the cards on a binder ring for easy storage and to prevent lost pieces.
Flip and Cover
Flip and Cover is another new addition with the free dental health themed Science of Reading literacy centers!
For this center, students will flip over a word and read it. They will find the matching picture and cover it on their mat.
Cover by Code
I’m not sure what it is about Cover by Code centers, but students can never seem to get enough of them. Personally, I just love how easy they are to prep – print and add colored manipulatives! It doesn’t get easier than that.
For this literacy center, students will cover the words that match the pictures with the matching color.
Spin and Cover
Spin and Cover is another classic. Just add transparent spinners or create spinners out of paperclips and pencils.
Students will spin a picture and then find and cover the matching word. This can also be played as a partner game. Each player will need their own color cubes. The player with the most spots covered in the end wins.
